Things to Do in Taijiang National Park (Annan District)

Taijiang National Park grabs you by the collar on Taiwan's southwest coast. The land itself feels provisional, flipping between tidal flat, fishpond, mangrove thicket, and open lagoon as you blink and as the seasons roll. The park lies inside Tainan's Annan District and carries centuries of maritime memory. This was once the Taijiang Inner Sea, a shallow lagoon Dutch traders and Zheng Chenggong's fleet threaded in the 17th century before silt slammed the door on the ocean. You still sense that past in the wind-scoured flatness. It feels less like a park and more like a place still arguing with its own future. The mangroves pull the crowds, and they earn the hype. The Sicao Green Tunnel, a canal carved through a living cathedral of branches, is one of those rare experiences that survives its Instagram fame. On the flat-bottom boat the temperature drops, the light turns pale green, and the only soundtrack is the dip of paddles and the sudden lift of an egret from the root maze. Past the tunnel, the Sicao Wildlife Refuge unrolls across fishponds and mudflats where thousands of migratory birds brake for winter. Between October and March the Zengwun River Estuary at the park's southern lip hosts the planet's largest wintering flock of black-faced spoonbills, an endangered species that has become the region's unofficial mascot. Salt shaped Annan District for over three hundred years. The brackish flats were quilted into salt fields, and that industry stamped the land, the food, and the local identity in ways you can still taste and see. Rectangular salt beds survive in places, their thin water catching afternoon light in pink and copper when algae throw a party. The fishing settlements along the park's rim, villages that reek of drying shrimp and two-stroke outboards, feel authentically peripheral in a way Tainan's celebrated old quarter never will.

Most visitors reach Taijiang National Park from central Tainan by scooter, which remains the most practical way to navigate attractions that are spread across a wide stretch of Annan District coastline. The distance between the Sicao Green Tunnel and the Zengwun Estuary spoonbill grounds is around 20 kilometers. Public buses, while they do run to parts of the park, operate on schedules that make combining the northern and southern sections in a single day difficult without your own wheels. Scooter rental shops in central Tainan are easy to find, and the ride out via Provincial Highway 17 takes 20 to 30 minutes depending on traffic. The park is largely flat, which makes cycling viable if you're planning to stay in the Sicao area only. The visitor center rents bicycles at modest rates on weekends. Ride-sharing apps cover the route from central Tainan to the park entrance and can be booked for the return trip, though waiting times within the park itself can run long outside peak hours.
