Transportation in Tainan

Tainan moves at a different pace than Taipei, and its transport network reflects that. The city's compact historic core is walkable. But the wider urban area rewards visitors who rent a scooter or bicycle, these are the dominant local modes, and for good reason. YouBike (Taiwan's public bicycle-sharing system) operates throughout Tainan with stations near major attractions, making it a practical budget option for daytime sightseeing. City buses run throughout the day but service can be infrequent on routes away from the main corridors, so don't rely on them for tight itineraries. Taxis and ride-hailing apps (Uber operates here) fill the gaps reliably, with fares in the economy range by regional standards. One thing first-time visitors consistently get wrong: the Taiwan High Speed Rail (THSR) Tainan Station is not in the city. It sits roughly 12 km outside the urban core in Xinzuo District. From there, you'll need a connecting shuttle bus or taxi to reach central Tainan, budget extra time when planning arrival or departure. The conventional Taiwan Railways (TRA) Tainan Station, by contrast, sits right in central the city and is the better arrival point if your routing allows it. Tainan Airport (TNN) handles domestic flights, primarily from Taipei, and sits conveniently close to the city center, a short taxi ride puts you near the historic districts without the longer transfer required from THSR.
